Freedom of internet is diminishing

If you think that only a few countries restrict access to the internet then think again.  The trend towards internet censorship is increasing since 2015 and it is getting worst.  Freedom on the Net just released a study which reveals that, " two-thirds of all internet users – 67% – live in countries where criticism of the government, military, or ruling family is subject to censorship."

The determinant is simple by ranking each country according to their level of internet freedom.  Country with the best record is 0 while that with the worst record is 100.  China scores 88 and is technically the country with the most censorship while countries like the United States and South Africa for example has the freest internet with less than 30.

How free is the internet?

The Philippines is still lucky since we are ranked around 11-20.  This means that we have a lot of freedom in the internet to enjoy.  Well, I am sure we have specially when we can say a lot of things and even proliferate even false news and stupid trends online.  However, this is not the case in most countries around the world.

Only 24% of the internet's population had completely free access, well this includes the Philippines.  Twenty-nine percent had partyly free access and a whooping 35% had no free access at all.  The remaining 12% were not been able to be assessed by the group.

According to the report, internet freedom continue to decline for the sixth year in a row.

Globally, 27% of all internet users live in countries where people have been arrested for publishing, sharing, or merely “liking” content on Facebook. Authorities in 38 countries made arrests based on social media posts over the past year. That's compared to 21 countries where people were arrested for content published on news sites or blogs.

Internet freedom in the Philippines?

Technically we had a Cyber Crime Law already dubbed as the "Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012" or Republic Act 10175.  Although the law is very controversial and was met with protest from various netizens it took full effect on August 2013.

Republic Ast 10175 technically punishes various acts which includes illegal access, illegal interception, data interference, misuse of devices, cyber-squatting, computer forgery, computer fraud, computer identity theft, cyber sex, child pornography, and unsolicited commercial communication.  You can view the full text of the law here and the implementing rules and regulations here.
