Expect Longer Tweets at 280 Characters

Are some of you already experiencing the bigger Twitter experience?  Twitter just announced that they will be doubling their character limit to a 280-character tweet according to a recent blog post.  The move is seen as an answer to the growing frustration within the social media platform regarding the limits of expression.

Logic behind longer 280-character tweet

“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people tweeting in English, When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting — which is awesome!”

This was written on the Twitter blog post announcing the global test run for the new longer Twitter messaging.  The social media network sees the burden of people having trouble recomposing their ideas due to the limit which was patterned with the long obsolete 160-character SMS limit.

When will the longer tweet be implemented?

As of the moment the 280-character tweets are only available to a select few since it is just being tested.  Upon testing and seeing their initial reactions it would hopefully be rolled out globally.

We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters – we felt it, too. But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint. We are excited to share this today, and we will keep you posted about what we see and what comes next.

Here are some graphics and data shared by Twitter.

Do you prefer a longer tweet at 280 characters or would you rather stick to 140 characters?
